Talks continue over
GM Lordstown contract

LORDSTOWN — Talks over a new labor contract at General Motors' Lordstown plant are continuing in Detroit. Leaders of the United Auto Workers have been meeting with corporate executives over changes that the company wants at the plant, UAW Local 1112 told its members in a flier this week.

Local bargaining on a labor contract was placed on hold because of the concerns of UAW officials in Detroit. No further details were provided but in the past, Local 1112 has said GM is pushing for 10-hour shifts and contracting out more work.

A new local labor contract is seen as crucial to GM's committing to keeping the plant open beyond June 2009, when production of the Chevrolet Cobalt is scheduled to end.
