Getting older in the Valley

YOUNGSTOWN — AARP Ohio is co-sponsoring a workshop, "Creating a Vision for Aging in Mahoning County," that is about what changes are coming and what changes are possible and how Mahoning Valley residents can shape its future with the first wave of baby boomers turning 65 in just a few years. Thinking ahead now will open social and civic opportunities to benefit and engage residents of all ages, said Rebecca Wheeler-Grieve, community outreach manager for AARP Ohio.

The workshop is Sept. 26 at the Jewish Community Center, 517 Gypsy Lane, and is open to all at no charge. It begins with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Reservations should be made no later than Friday by calling (330) 782-6171. The presenters are:

Dr. Dan Van Dussen of Youngstown State University, who will discuss the current system of services for aging Ohioans at 9:10 a.m.

Wheeler-Grieve, who will present "Livable Communities: What They Are, Why We Should Care and How to Prepare" at 10 a.m.

AARP Ohio Advocacy Associate State Director William Sundermeyer, who will discuss "Creating the Change We Want to See: Effective Advocacy Strategies," at 11 a.m.

The event is also sponsored by the Senior Vision Council of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way.

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Free skin cancer screenings will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, 875 N. Hermitage Road. Safety day in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — In cooperation with Home Depot, the St. Elizabeth Emergency and Diagnostic Center, 6252 Mahoning Ave., will have its second annual safety day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6. Young visitors to the emergency center will be able to participate in Safety City activities, improving their familiarity with traffic laws and bike and pedestrian safety issues. Other activities include visits from the STAT medevac helicopter, ambulance companies and local police and fire departments.

GREENVILLE, Pa. — UPMC Horizon, Thiel College, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul Homes are collaborating to present the Community Medical Ethics Project on Sept. 26 in the Sawhill-Georgian Room of Thiel's Howard Miller Student Center. Dr. Rhonda Gay Hartman, a faculty member at Duquesne University's School of Law and Health Care Ethics Program and the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine, will present two sessions with identical content from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. YOUNGSTOWN — The MammoVan, a mobile mammography unit, will offer breast cancer screenings to Mahoning Valley women from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the YWCA, 25 W. BERLIN — The Mahoning County District Board of Health, in cooperation with the city of Struthers, Animal Charity, the county dog warden, Angels for Animals and volunteer veterinarians, are offering rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Berlin Township Fire Hall, state Routes 224 and 534. The cost is $2, and dogs must be on a leash and cats should be caged or secured in a cloth pillowcase. Rabies shots for all dogs, cats and ferrets older than 3 months are required in the Mahoning County General Health District.

CHAMPION — James Mattes, public affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration, will speak on "Updates in Social Security Benefits" at the Tri-County Chapter of Medical Assistants' meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center on Education Highway. NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Jameson Hospital is offering KidShape, a nine-week pediatric weight management program for families with overweight children, based on BMI, ages 6 to 14. The goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle for the entire family through healthy eating, physical activity and positive self-esteem.

Classes will meet Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jameson South Campus Conference Center, 1000 E. Mercer St., beginning Oct. 1. The cost per child is $10. A parent or guardian is required to attend with each enrolled child. Call (724) 656-4270 to register. The program is co-sponsored by the Jameson Hospital Community and Staff Education and The HighMark Foundation.

WARREN — The St. Joseph Minor Emergency & Diagnostic Center, 1296 Tod Place, will have a Fall Health & Help Fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 26. The event will feature blood pressure checks, cholesterol and bone density screenings, and information on the WIC (Women, Infants, Children) program. The Warren Police Department will provide fingerprinting of children, and the Warren Fire Department will provide fire safety education. The fire department's smoke trailer will arrive at 4 p.m. Admission is free, but each family that attends is asked to bring a canned good to be donated to the Warren Family Mission.
