CLEVELAND – The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter, is offering a new educational series called "Breaking the Pain Chain," with arthritis and fibromyalgia versions of the series planned throughout the chapter's 22-county service area. Upcoming "Breaking the Fibromyalgia Pain Chain" programs include: Boardman on Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive.

The cost is $10 per session. For those who pre-register for all four sessions, the total cost is $35. Partial need-based scholarships are available. To register, call (216) 831-7000 ext. 114 or (800) 245-2275 ext. 114.

Well-child clinic

GIRARD — The Girard Health Department is offering a well-child immunization clinic at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the city building, 100 W. Main St. The clinic is free to Girard children. A parent or guardian must accompany children under the age of 18, and must bring a copy of the child's immunization record. Preregistration is necessary. Call (330) 545-6048.

Self-esteem program

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon if offering the program Girls on the Run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 25 and ending Nov. 15, at the center, 875 N. Hermitage Road. The program is designed to provide girls in fourth through sixth grades with stronger self-esteem, respect for others, the value of teamwork and the importance of community. Ovarian seminar

BOARDMAN — Dr. Robert L. Collins of The Reproductive Center is offering a free public seminar on polycyctic ovarian syndrome for women with abnormal menstrual cycles, hair growth and weight gain. First aid class

BOARDMAN — The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter is offering a first aid class Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m. for $9.11. The standard fee for the class is $35. To register, call (330) 726-6063.

Health fair Sept. 26

WARREN — The St. Joseph Minor Emergency & Diagnostic Center at 1296 Tod Place is offering a Fall Health & Help Fair on Sept. 26 from 2 to 7 p.m. The event will feature blood pressure checks, cholesterol and bone density screenings, and information on WIC (Women, Infants, Children). The Warren Police Department will provide fingerprinting of children, and the Warren Fire Department will provide fire safety education. The fire department's smoke trailer will arrive at the fair at 4 p.m.

Admission is free, but each family that attends is asked to bring a canned good to be donated to the Warren Family Mission.

Volunteer picnic

ALLIANCE — On Friday, the Alliance Community Hospital Volunteer Department will have its annual volunteer picnic. All former ACH volunteers are invited. The evening will begin with a pot-luck meal at 4:30 p.m. in the Alliance First Friends Church pavilion. Each person is asked to bring a dish to share. Table service and drinks will be provided.

YOUNGSTOWN — The National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI Mahoning Valley, is conducting the 2007 fall session of its Family-to-Family education classes, which are sponsored by NAMI Ohio and funded locally by the Mahoning County Mental Health Board. These classes are structured to help family members understand and support their ill relative while maintaining their own well-being. The course includes a variety of topics, such as definitions of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder; brain biology and causes of brain disorders; medications and treatment; communications; rehabilitation and recovery and more. This nationally recognized curriculum is taught by trained family members.

The series of 12 weekly classes will begin Monday and run through Nov. 26 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. each Monday at the Jewish Community Center 505, Gypsy Lane. There is no cost for family members. La Leche League
