Bullets miss by inches

Bullets miss by inches

YOUNGSTOWN — A girl sleeping on a couch was lucky not to have been hit by bullets fired into her home in the 100 block of East Lucius Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. At least one hole in the couch was inches from her head. The girl's mother heard the shots and looked out an upstairs window to see muzzle flashes across the street. Police found three bullet holes in the front door and more holes in interior walls.

Chief issues warning

NORTH LIMA — E-mails telling you that police will be called if you reverse your personal identification number, or PIN, while being robbed at an ATM are an "urban legend," says Beaver Police Chief Carl N. Frost. The chief said he did some checking after receiving several e-mails, including one from a bank in Cleveland, that claim putting a PIN in backward will summon police. "This does not work," Frost said. "We do not want to see anyone get hurt in the unfortunate event they are robbed at an ATM and try to stall the robber thinking police are on the way."

Sobriety checkpoint

The Trumbull County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 4 to 8 p.m. today to deter and intercept impaired drivers. Kim Peters, OVI task force coordinator, said officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment. In addition to the checkpoint, police departments will be conducting alcohol saturation patrols to target impaired drivers. Task force funding is provided by a grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Governors Highway Safety Office.

School board officers

NORTH LIMA — South Range Board of Education has named Ralph Wince board president. During its annual reorganization meeting last week, the board also named John Fromel vice president. The board agreed to continue conducting its regular public meetings at 7:30 p.m. the third Monday of the month, alternating the meeting place between the South Range High School Library and Greenford Middle School.

Septic tank reminders

POLAND — Mahoning County District Board of Health has begun mailing pumping reminders to 556 Poland Township residents with septic systems. Septic tanks should be pumped at varying intervals depending on household size and water usage, said Matthew Stefanak, county health commissioner. A four-person household with a 1,000-gallon septic tank should have its septic tank pumped every three years. Pumpers notify the health board when they pump a septic tank so the board can keep track of when a septic system was last pumped.
