Repairs close roads

YOUNGSTOWN — Hitchcock Road in Boardman between U.S. Route 224 and Western Reserve Road will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for replacement of a storm sewer. Traffic will be detoured via Route 224, Glenwood Avenue and Western Reserve Road, the Mahoning County engineer's office announced.

Another storm sewer replacement project, which began Aug. 3 and will be completed Friday, has necessitated the closing of Burkey Road between Raccoon Road and Orkney Avenue in Austintown. The detour is via Raccoon and New roads and Orkney Avenue.

Attempted robbery

LIBERTY — Jamil Niser, owner of Liberty Mini Mart, 3007 Belmont Ave., faced a would-be robber armed with what Niser described as "a stick of dynamite with wire and tape on it."

Niser said the man entered the store about 9:30 a.m. Sunday and put a plastic bag on the counter, said it was a bomb and then asked for money.

Niser said he told the man, "look behind you" and the man apparently thought someone else was coming in and fled the store. Niser saw a car with no license plate pulling out.

Niser has owned the store for seven years. There have been no other incidents like the one Sunday, Niser said.

Compost site closed

BOARDMAN — The township's compost site will close today and remain closed until further notice.

The township's weekly branch pickup is also suspended until further notice. The suspensions are because of a compost recycling machine that must be repaired.

Cigarettes stolen

YOUNGSTOWN — Someone broke into the CVS Pharmacy, 1833 Oak St., late Saturday. A manager said an undetermined number of cigarettes were stolen; an inventory will be done to determine whether anything else is missing.

Weapon, drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Police stopped Reginald Gilchrist Jr., 24, of Louis Street on a traffic violation. After searching his car, they charged him with carrying a concealed weapon, a loaded 45-caliber handgun, and possession of marijuana. He also was issued a citation for improper lane change. A check on his passenger, Lucy Valentin, 37, of East Philadelphia Avenue, showed she was wanted by Mahoning County on a child endangerment charge. Both were taken into custody after the traffic stop Saturday evening.

Man reports robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — A Pittsburgh man told police that two men, one armed with a handgun, robbed him of merchandise Saturday afternoon as he was parked outside Platinum Cuts, 542 Catalina Ave. Police reports didn't say why he was at the business or what kind of merchandise was taken.

Loud music traffic stops

YOUNGSTOWN — Over the weekend, police made two stops over loud music.

At 9:45 a.m. Saturday, police heard loud music from a vehicle on Sherwood Avenue. Police stopped the car and charged the driver, Anthony L. Johnson, 24, of Hillman Avenue, with playing loud music and driving with no license.

About 3:10 p.m. Sunday, police heard loud music coming from a vehicle on Mahoning Avenue. The driver, Lamont Askew, 21, of East Earle Avenue, was cited for an excessive vehicular sound amplification system.
