2 who ate moonflower seeds get sentenced

LISBON — Two Salem men found wandering in the streets early last Thursday after eating seeds of the hallucinogenic moonflower have been sentenced on charges of disorderly conduct.

Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Mark Frost of Columbiana County Municipal Court today fined Christopher Lanning, 19, of South Lundy Avenue, and Jeffrey L. Mellot, 18, of Walnut Street, $100 each.

They were each given suspended 30-day jail sentences and placed on probation for two years. As part of their probation, each man will have to do 40 hours of community service. The men also will have to pay $120 to cover the administrative costs of their probation.

Police said the men went on the Internet and looked up the flower that blooms at night. They took portions of the flower from the garden at the Salem Historical Society's garden. The remaining flowers have been removed.
