Lordstown attorney given Newton Falls bench post

He will serve until after an election is held in November 2007.

WARREN — Atty. Larry Turner of Lordstown has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of Newton Falls Municipal Court judge.

Gov. Bob Taft made the appointment Tuesday, placing Turner in the position starting Sept. 25.

Turner will serve until after an election is held in November 2007. That election would fill the position for the remaining two years of the term.

Turner replaces Judge Thomas Old, who retired Sept. 1.

The Trumbull County Republican Party recommended Turner and two others, Tracey Leslo and David Toepfer, to the governor.

The judicial district covers Lordstown and Newton Falls and the townships of Newton, Braceville, Southington, Bristol, Farmington, Bloomfield and Mesopotamia. It also includes the Ohio Turnpike in Trumbull County.

Turner is a partner with the law firm of Turner, May & Shepard of Warren.

He is a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the Greater Western Reserve Council. He is a member of the Trumbull County Farm Bureau, chairman of the Trumbull County Transit Citizens Committee, a member of the Regional Chamber and president of the PTA Council for Warren City Schools.

According to the Ohio Supreme Court, this year a full-time Ohio municipal judge is paid $109,150.

Because the governor had not made his selection by Sept. 1, a retired judge, Perry G. Dickinson, was appointed by the Supreme Court to fill in until an appointment was made.

Turner has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Akron and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University.
