YOUNGSTOWN — After six weeks on the run, Anthony M. Caulton, accused of killing a man at a peewee football game, was captured in the Seattle area.

The capture was announced Monday afternoon at a press conference at the Youngstown Police Department. In attendance were police Chief Jimmy F. Hughes, U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott, FBI Special Agent John Lichtefeld, Detective Sgt. John Kelty and members of the marshals' fugitive task force.

Hughes said Caulton was found at a house in Bremerton, Wash., on the Kitsap Peninsula. He said the manhunt took in Ohio and many other states.

"We're excited this apprehension was made," Hughes said.

Members of the Pacific Northwest Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, along with Bremerton police, arrested Caulton around 11 a.m. Monday West Coast time, three hours behind Ohio.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Dean Michael said Caulton will have to be extradited to Ohio. Michael said cooperation between all police agencies involved was crucial.

Caulton was being held in the Kitsap County jail late Monday pending an extradition hearing.

Hiding at friend's

Kelty said Caulton was found hiding at a friend's house at 1501 Snyder St. in Bremerton. The homicide detective said police there would search the place for firearms.

Kelty was surprised Caulton had traveled that far. He believed Caulton didn't have the financial ability to travel across the country. Bremerton, near Seattle, is on Puget Sound.

A murder warrant was issued for Caulton, 25, of East Auburndale Avenue, within days of the Aug. 19 shooting death of Larry D. Jones.

Jones, 31, of Ravenwood Avenue, was hit multiple times in the stands at the former South High Stadium behind Eagle Heights Academy on Market Street while a peewee football game was in progress. A domestic situation may have erupted into gunfire, police said.

Reward offered

A $5,000 reward was offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to Caulton's arrest. Officials said Monday it was too soon to discuss the reward.

Records show Caulton has an unrelated possession-of-cocaine case pending in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. He was indicted in January. A hearing on a motion to suppress evidence had been scheduled for Sept. 28.

Based on the murder charge, the judge on the drug case revoked his bond and issued a warrant for his arrest Aug. 24.
