Teens scatter as cops arrive at party
YOUNGSTOWN Youths scattered when police responded to reports of underage drinking at a loud party in the 400 block of West Heights Avenue.
When Patrolmen Greg Miller, Greg Mullennex and Doug Pesa arrived around 10:45 p.m. Sunday, the teenagers started yelling, "Police!" and took off running through the West Side neighborhood. At least six youths, gathered around a Jeep in the driveway of the party house, reached inside the vehicle, removed bags of different sizes and then ran through rear yards.
The driver, later identified as John Walsh, 18, of South Belle Vista Avenue, was caught as he ran to the rear yard. The officers said they saw several empty beer cans inside the Jeep, as well as an empty bottle of Jagermeister, a licorice-flavored liqueur. The officers said they also found an open bag of suspected marijuana in the Jeep's console tray.
Walsh was issued a citation charging him with drug abuse (marijuana), police said. Walsh was then taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center because of his highly intoxicated state and inability to care for himself, police said. He is due in municipal court Tuesday for arraignment.
