Homecoming festivities to include performance by country group
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. Slippery Rock University's homecoming weekend, set for Friday and Saturday, features a homecoming pep rally, a concert by the Poverty Neck Hillbillies and a traditional homecoming parade through downtown Slippery Rock.
Opening events for the weekend, under the theme "ROCKtoberfest," include a 6 p.m. Friday pep rally, featuring the SRU football team, cheerleaders and the SRU Marching Pride, under the direction of James Berry, assistant professor of music.
The rally, complete with bonfire and fireworks, will be held on Old Thompson Field (or inside Morrow Field House if it rains). Crowning of this year's homecoming king and queen will be part of the festivities.
The Stickers rock band will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday as the opening act for the Poverty Neck Hillbillies as part of the free concert at Thompson.
The football team plays Lock Haven University at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the field hockey team plays Mansfield at 10 a.m.
In addition, the SRU Alumni Association will sponsor its annual "Fall Classic Slippery Rock Golf Outing" at Stonewall Golf Club, Ellwood City. The shotgun start is set for 10 a.m. Friday with proceeds going to the association's student scholarship funds and the Russell Wright Alumni House Expansion Project. Call (724) 738-2018 for details.
