Convention of architects has designs on Youngstown

The public is invited to hear a keynote speech by a renowned architect.

YOUNGSTOWN — About 325 architects from around Ohio are in Youngstown this week for the state convention of the American Institute of Architects.

Sessions are being held at the DeYor Performing Arts Center and Stambaugh Auditorium, both in Youngstown, and the Holiday Inn in Boardman.

The public is invited to attend the keynote address and a walking tour of downtown.

Keynote address

William McDonough, a nationally recognized architect, will deliver the keynote address at 9 a.m. Friday at Stambaugh Auditorium.

He is the founding principal of William McDonough + Partners, of Charlottesville, Va. The firm has developed a design philosophy called "cradle to cradle" that goes beyond mitigating environmental damage. The concept calls for buildings that regenerate by producing more energy than they consume and purifying air and water instead of polluting them.

Time magazine named McDonough a "Hero of the Planet" in 1999. He has received the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development, the National Design Award and the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

Two-hour tour

A two-hour walking tour of Youngstown's architecture will begin from the central square at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Also included in the conference will be information sessions for the architects and the state chapter's annual meeting and awards presentation.

The convention, which runs today through Saturday, is hosted by the Eastern Ohio Chapter of the AIA.
