YSU math-research center set to open
YOUNGSTOWN The Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics at Youngstown State University officially opens with a conference 9 a.m. Saturday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center.
Nearly 100 faculty members, students and alumni are expected to attend the event, which will include panel discussions, campus tours and research poster presentations by students.
CURMath was approved by YSU trustees in December and is being created in part by the generosity of Doug Faires, a 1963 YSU graduate who joined the mathematics faculty in 1969 before retiring last year. He provided about $40,000 in upfront money in proceeds from textbooks he has authored.
Faires also is donating his entire extended teaching salary over the next three to five years to endow the new center. That amounts to about $100,000. Many of his former students have also donated to the center.
CURMath is designed to assist members of the YSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics to promote the professional development and research activities of undergraduate students interested in mathematics.
