Warrant in dog attack
Warrant in dog attack
YOUNGSTOWN A warrant has been issued for the owner of two large dogs shot by police after the animals attacked a retired firefighter out walking his tiny dog last month near Mill Creek Park. City Prosecutor Jay Macejko said Jamie Traylor, 20, of Canfield Road, is charged with two counts of owning or harboring vicious dogs. The victim, David Roch, 55, of the West Side, suffered a serious hand injury April 18 and required surgery.
Police said two massive Cane Corsos, a mastiff breed, turned their attention on Roch when he lifted his dog to protect her. A Mill Creek MetroParks police officer used a shotgun to kill one dog behind Judge Maureen A. Cronin's house on Canfield Road. The second dog ran near Kiawatha Drive and was shot and killed by a city patrolman.
Senate OKs Regents bill
COLUMBUS The Ohio Senate unanimously passed legislation Wednesday allowing the governor to appoint the chancellor over the state Board of Regents. Among other duties, the regents make recommendations for nearly $3 billion in state funding for higher education, authorizes new degree programs and manages state-funded financial aid. Additionally, the regents control the appointment of a chancellor to oversee their professional staff. Under the legislation, the governor, with Senate review and confirmation, would make those appointments, with the regents relegated to an advisory role. The legislation also would require the chancellor, by Sept. 28, to provide a report to the General Assembly outlining ways to make college costs more affordable and accessible and keep students from leaving the state after graduation.
Traffic check points
WARREN Members of the Trumbull County Safety Initiative will conduct four traffic check points during May. They will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday; 7 to 11 a.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18; and from 7 to 11 a.m. May 23. The target routes are U.S. Routes 62 and 422 and state routes 193, 45 and 46. The goal is to reduce the number of speed-related crashes in Trumbull County. Speed was a factor in more than 40 percent of the crashes investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in the county during 2006. The departments participating will be OSHP, Lordstown, Niles and Warren and Bazetta, Brookfield, Howland, Hubbard, Liberty and Weathersfield townships.
Arrested in threats
YOUNGSTOWN U.S. Marshals arrested the woman accused of making threats to the Boardman police department. Dean Michael of the Marshals Service said Ceil Scott, 44, of Park Avenue, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on Oak Hill Avenue near Myrtle Avenue. Scott was charged in Youngstown Municipal Court with aggravated menacing. A city police sergeant reported to township police earlier this week that during a phone conversation with Scott, she said she wanted to get a gun and "shoot up" the township police department. The doors leading from the lobby into the police department and the administrative offices of the government center on Market Street in the township were locked Tuesday after the threat was reported. The doors were unlocked and access returned to normal after Scott's arrest.
Stabbing victim
LISBON A man stabbed early Tuesday remained in guarded condition Wednesday, said Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith. Smith said Jack Gates, 42, of Sixteen School Road in Yellow Creek Township, was unconscious after surgery. He was stabbed four times in the chest in a fight over an unnamed woman. He was flown to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Presbyterian Hospital. Smith said Gates was stabbed by Daniel Wright, 38, of Fourth Street, Toronto, in Jefferson County. Wright, a friend of Gates', remains in the county jail on a charge of assault.
Man stabbed in hip
YOUNGSTOWN Savar Hendricks, 24, of East Dewey Avenue was stabbed in the hip around 3 a.m. Wednesday and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was in satisfactory condition late Wednesday. Police, who found Hendricks sitting in a porch chair at his home, said he told them he was stabbed at a bar and refused to comment further. A woman interviewed at the house gave police several versions of what happened, reports show.
