Panel will scrutinize comprehensive plan
HILLSVILLE, Pa. The final draft of a comprehensive plan for Mahoning Township will be reviewed by the township planning commission when it meets 7 p.m. May 16 at the township community center.
Planning Commission Chairman Don Dougherty told township supervisors when they met Tuesday that if the draft is accepted, the next step is to set a public hearing on the plan, which supervisors must then decide whether to approve.
Dougherty said after the meeting that Mahoning has gone together with Pulaski and Union townships to formulate a plan because the state is more likely to fund projects in which several municipalities are cooperating. All three of the townships will have to approve the final plan.
The plan, which has been one year in preparation, is being coordinated by Olsen & Associates, Butler, the same firm that prepared Lawrence County's comprehensive plan. It addresses zoning and land development.
Also Tuesday, supervisors announced the Northwest Lawrence County Regional Police Commission has been given a Governor's Award for local governmental excellence. The award, dated March 28, notes the commission's "creativity and accomplishments" and "continuous efforts to improve community life." The commission is made up of supervisors from Mahoning and Pulaski townships and oversees their cooperative police department.
