YOUNGSTOWN A jury of eight women and four men has convicted a Warren man of felonious assault on a police officer, failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and receiving stolen property.
The jury rendered its verdict Friday against Clifford West, 45, of Folsom Street Northwest, after four hours of deliberations at the end of a three-day trial before Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
The case stemmed from a police pursuit from downtown Youngstown to the city's West Side in the early hours of Oct. 19, 2006. West faces three to 161/2 years in prison when he is sentenced.
West, who was charged with backing the stolen pickup truck he was driving into a Youngstown police car, was convicted of felonious assault against Patrolman George Wallace, who occupied that cruiser.
The jury, however, acquitted West of another felonious assault count that charged him with trying to ram a Youngstown police car occupied by Patrolman Brian Voitus.
Police tried to stop West at Belmont Avenue and Commerce Street, where they said he failed to signal a turn, then chased him over Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Madison Avenue Expressway, Belle Vista Avenue, Steel Street and Burbank Avenue, before stopping him at Leadville and Burbank Avenues, said Michael McBride, assistant county prosecutor.
Defense lawyer Jeffrey Limbian said an appeal will be filed.
