Delphi wants temps with experience
LIBERTY About 275 people were on hand when a hiring agency started taking applications this morning for temporary jobs at Delphi Packard Electric. Applicants said Packard is looking for workers with at least two years of manufacturing or warehouse experience.
The Trumbull County One-Stop is accepting applications each day through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Metroplex.
Bill Turner, One-Stop administrator, said an employee at a nearby business said the first person lined up at 4:30 a.m. today. Most of the early arrivals showed up after 9 a.m., he said.
Turner added, however, that there was no advantage to being early. All of the applications that are received through Thursday will be forwarded to Packard for evaluation.
Packard is hiring 300 people to work up to 120 days. The jobs pay $10 an hour and have no benefits.
Packard needs workers to replace regular employees who are being trained on new jobs. The maker of vehicle wiring systems is cutting its local hourly work force from 3,800 to 700 through buyouts and early retirement incentives. The regular workers who remain are being reassigned, so the temporary workers are needed to fill in.
