MCDONALD COUNCIL Agenda items

Village council handled these matters on Wednesday:

Heard about an annual open house as part of Fire Prevention Week. The event will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the fire station, 451 Ohio Ave., and is geared toward helping youngsters feel comfortable around fire vehicles and ambulances. Information related to fire safety and prevention will be available and smoke detectors will be given away, Chief Ed Winterbauer said. A helicopter ambulance will land around 2:30 p.m. for adults and children to tour, he added.

Accepted the resignation of part-time firefighter Dan Morgan, who took an out-of-state position. Morgan served for five years on the department; he also worked as an emergency medical technician.

Appointed as a junior firefighter 17-year-old John R. Harvey, whose duties will include going to fire scenes, working with fire hydrants and assisting with cleanup. His appointment will bring to four the number of volunteer junior firefighters on the force, Winterbauer said.

Accepted the retirement of Patrolman Carl White from the McDonald Police Department, effective Oct. 18. White started with the department in 1974 and has worked full time for 12 years.

Discussed a curbside leaf pickup program that is to begin today. Village residents can rake their leaves to the curb and one of two machines will be out daily to clean up leaves throughout McDonald, village administrator Thomas Domitrovich noted, adding that the program will continue into December, weather permitting. Those who wish to bag their leaves for pickup should call the municipal building at (330) 530-5472, Domitrovich said.

Heard about the advertisement of bids to repair the roof of the McDonald Recreational Center.
