Activities planned this month at Mill Creek MetroParks facilities:

Oct. 1: 1-4 p.m., Bobbie Schwartz, an Ohio landscape designer, will discuss her approach to gardening. A question-and-answer session and a book signing will conclude the program. Call (330) 740-7116 to register.

Oct. 1: 2 p.m. Begin the new month by admiring fall wildflowers in this hike. Meet at MetroParks Farm in Canfield. Moderate difficulty, 2 miles.

Oct. 3: 5:30-8 p.m., Lynn Cardwell will teach students how to make a clay bowl embossed with leaf patterns. The work will be glazed in autumn colors, fired and ready to take home Oct. 24. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $32 ($25 FFRG members).

Oct. 3: 6:30-8 p.m., children ages 6 and older with their adult companions will mix up cake batter and bake a decorative herbal cake. Oct. 7 and 14: 9 a.m., join volunteer naturalist Nancy Brundage to learn about our local birds during these walks. Bring binoculars. Meet at Newport Wetlands. Easy rating, less than a mile.

Oct. 7-8: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., see the selection of bulbs at Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens bulb sale. Pre-orders will be ready for pickup. Call (330) 740-7116 for information.

Oct. 7: 2-4 p.m., kayaking around Lake Newport. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch. Kayakers of all skill levels are invited to join the escorted trip. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Minors 11-15 must share a tandem kayak with an adult; 16- and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult. Participants need to complete a waiver. Melnick Museum: "Warren H. Manning, Landscape Architect," through December. This prominent Midwest landscape architect worked on the "Big Cut," a 1920s park project that carved a road through the hill to create West Drive.
