City unveils its new logo
The city is giving away the signs for free to downtown businesses.
YOUNGSTOWN The city unveiled a new logo that highlights the renaissance occurring in its downtown.
"We want to celebrate and recognize the success of the downtown, and these signs will help point that out," said Claire Maluso, the city's Federal Plaza director.
Richard Hahn, president and owner of Keynote Media, developed the design. The logo reads: "It's Happening Here!" at the top. Below it is "Downtown Youngstown" in large letters in front of a burnt-orange background.
Maluso is offering the 8.5-inch-by-11-inch laminated signs to downtown businesses at no cost. The cost to the city for the signs is minimal, she said.
The city gave out more than 50 signs Wednesday.
"The idea is to give the downtown a logo that describes the new look and increased activity in our downtown," Maluso said.
New businesses
A number of new businesses, mostly eateries, have opened in the downtown area since Federal Plaza was reopened less than two years ago.
Also, the city-owned Chevrolet Centre opened 11 months ago and the DeYor Performing Arts Center built the 600-seat Ford Family Recital Hall next to its Edward W. Powers Auditorium on West Federal Street this year.
The city demolished the former Masters complex on West Federal and turned it into a parking lot this year. Five buildings west of the Youngstown Business Incubator, also on West Federal, are in the process of being demolished to make room for the Youngstown Technology Center.
The city purchased the former Phar-Mor Centre on West Federal and is attracting a number of tenants to the building, now known as 20 Federal Place.
Plans are under way to build apartments and condominiums at two other downtown buildings.
Those wanting to obtain the downtown signs can visit Maluso's office on the mezzanine floor of 20 Federal Place. She can also be reached at (330) 744-1708.
