Workshop to focus on revitalizing neighborhoods
YOUNGSTOWN Leaders from Louisville, Ky., and Akron will discuss strategies, policies and programs they used to revitalize formerly troubled neighborhoods at a workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Butler Institute of American Art's Zona Auditorium, 524 Wick Ave.
The program is the third of four workshops held here and sponsored by Wick Neighbors Inc., Youngstown 2010 and local banks. The workshops are free and open to the public.
They are designed to raise awareness, increase understanding and seek solutions on how to bring reinvestment to city neighborhoods. The workshops feature speakers with national reputations in their fields who discuss successful strategies for neighborhood redevelopment.
The speakers are Melissa Barry, Louisville's director of housing and community development, and Jerry Egan, Akron's manager of the comprehensive planning division.
This workshop "Financing Neighborhood Reinvestment: How Do Cities Do It?" focuses on the role of city hall in shaping the tools and incentives for potential developers and homeowners.
Also participating in the forum is Jason Whitehead, Youngstown's chief of staff/secretary to the mayor, and Heather McMahon, Warren's urban design and grants coordinator.
Jamael Tito Brown, executive director of Youngstown's Human Relations Commission and a Youngstown school board member, will serve as moderator.
The final workshop, set for Nov. 8, is called "Who Speaks for the Neighborhood? Who Sets the Neighborhood Agenda?"
