The following are annual cost estimates associated with owning a big dog. The figures are from the Web site Phouka.com, which offers advice on various aspects of dog care.
Cost: The cost of popular dogs such as pit bulls ($500 to $850), Cane Corsos ($800 to $1,200) and Rottweilers ($1,000) is comparable to other common but purebred family dogs such as Labrador retrievers ($800), German shepherds ($2,000) and golden retrievers ($450 to $1,500).
Food: About $270, but treats may be extra.
Heartworm prevention: About $42.
Toys.: About $25.
Grooming: About $122, but may vary.
Dog license: $10 to $20.
Medications and vet visits also will vary.
