Man kidnapped, beaten by brother
Three men were arrested and one suspect remains at large.
YOUNGSTOWN A "significant drug raid" in the city followed a Jerry Springer-like family feud that included two brothers kidnapping another brother from his Austintown apartment, police say.
Lt. Robin Lees, commander of the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force, and Austintown Lt. Bryan Kloss talked about the crime as they stood behind a conference table filled with guns, ammo and drugs Friday afternoon. The contraband was seized with a search warrant Thursday afternoon from 111 E. Chalmers Ave. on the South Side.
Lees said the array of crack cocaine, prescription pills, drug scale and weaponry were evidence of a significant drug operation. Also confiscated was a hand-held night vision scope.
The crack seized, roughly half a pound, sells for $850 to $1,100 per ounce, said Jeff Solic, task force member and Austintown sergeant.
Kloss said the sequence of events began just before 4 p.m. Thursday, with a report that four armed intruders had entered an apartment at Compass West on Burkey Road. The intruders forcibly abducted the victim, he said.
Reports show that Reginald Young, 21, was taken against his will by the men, at least two of whom are his brothers. Young's girlfriend told police that he owes money and jewelry to his brothers.
The woman had her 2-year-old son in the apartment at the time of the break-in, police said.
Reginald Young told police he hid in a closet just before the apartment door was kicked in. He said he was screaming for help as the intruders dragged him away and that his brother Deangelo Young beat him with a metal club, likely a broom handle.
Reginald said he hasn't paid Deangelo back the $500 loaned to buy clothes.
Within 15 minutes of the kidnapping, the vehicle used to transport Reginald Young, a silver Lincoln Navigator, was spotted in the driveway at 111 East Chalmers, Kloss said. Police surrounded the house.
The victim was found inside the house unharmed.
One suspect remains at large. Arrested at the East Chalmers house on charges of aggravated burglary and kidnapping were:
Kilan R. Young, 20, of Jackson Street, Campbell.
Deangelo Young, 31, of 111 East Chalmers.
C. Eric Allen, 32, of East Philadelphia Avenue.
They are expected to be in court next week in Mahoning County Area Court, Austintown.
Solic said Kilan, Reginald and Deangelo are brothers. The officer said Deangelo was recently placed on probation in a drug case.
Records show that Deangelo Young, found guilty of possession of drugs in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, was placed on two years' community control a month ago by Judge Maureen A. Sweeney. His arrest could jeopardize his probation.
Reginald Young, meanwhile, was arrested on outstanding warrants out of Boardman, charging him with failure to appear on traffic charges.
Lees said it wasn't the first time that guns were taken from 111 East Chalmers. In early spring, the task force was at the house looking for a fugitive and came across firearms.
"They've rearmed since then," Lees said.
