MAHONING COUNTY

Court proceedings

Judges in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court handled these matters in their courtrooms Friday.

Kylen Blair, 19, of Linwood Avenue, found innocent of attempted murder and felonious assault with firearm specifications in the Oct. 25 wounding of Steven Slade. The jury rendered its verdict after three hours of deliberations at the end of a trial that began Monday before Judge Maureen A. Sweeney. Police found Slade, 18, of Woodside Avenue, who had been shot in the mouth, sitting on his porch, with three teeth on the carpet near the door. Witnesses said someone knocked on the door, and when Slade went to answer it, the shooter fired through the door and ran.

Sean McCord, 39, of West Chalmers Avenue, placed on three years' probation, including up to six months in residence at the Community Corrections Association on Market Street. He pleaded guilty to tampering with a Vindicator vending machine. He was sentenced by Judge James C. Evans, who also ordered him to make restitution to the newspaper for the destroyed machine within six months of his release from CCA. McCord had agreed to make up to $500 restitution when he entered his plea last month. If he violates probation, the judge said he could go to prison for a year. Police arrested McCord on Dec. 14 after they said they heard banging sounds coming from the basement of his residence about 1:30 a.m. Police said he was using a sledgehammer to break open a newspaper box.
