School board adopts appropriations
YOUNGSTOWN The city school board adopted appropriations through June 30, 2007, of $93.8 million, including $42.5 million for salaries and $15.9 for retirement and insurance benefits.
Treasurer Carolyn Funk told the board Tuesday that general fund revenues are estimated at $93,872,405, so appropriations may not exceed that amount.
Besides the salaries, retirement and benefits, other significant expenses include $30 million for purchased services, and $2.6 million for supplies and materials.
Funk estimated the district's actual needs at $105 million to $106 million. She said supplemental appropriations will be made in the coming weeks as needed.
Additional appropriations will be made once the budget deficit is certified by the Ohio Auditor of State's office and the Ohio Department of Education, Funk said.
Youngstown has begun implementing a plan to cut $8.4 million in spending this year, most of that coming through the elimination of 56 teaching positions, 21 administrative posts and 18 classified employee (custodians, secretaries, educational assistants) jobs.
Those cuts helped the district reduce its general fund budget from $120 million last year to $115 million this year.
