Rep. Hart gives funds to fire department

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart, D-4th, recently gave $53,666 in funding to the Wurtemburg-Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department.

The funding, which derives from a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant, will be used by the department to buy personal protective gear for firefighters. In April, Hart issued a support letter on behalf of the fire department outlining the need to update equipment.

"The funding for the Wurtemburg-Perry Fire Department is critical because it will provide every firefighter in the department with more modern and safer equipment," Hart said. "The safety of our firefighters is of the utmost importance, and the safety of the community relies on ensuring that our firefighters have the best equipment available. In addition, the department is also purchasing enough fire pagers for all of the volunteers so that they can now be dispatched through the 911 center."

In May, Hart introduced legislation to assist fire departments to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. The Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment and Retention Act will provide a $1,000 tax credit to individuals who spend at least three years on the force.

Volunteer firefighters can continue to claim the $1,000 tax credit each year for up to seven years. Once volunteers reach eight years of service, they can claim a $1,500 credit.
