King choir is still in need of singers

YOUNGSTOWN — The Martin Luther King Planning Committee of Mahoning County continues recruiting singers to perform in its 125-voice multiracial, multiethnic and multidenominational choir in celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Singers of all ages are encouraged to participate in the choir, which will highlight the third annual "Musical Tribute to Martin Luther King" on Jan. 13 at Powers Auditorium in downtown Youngstown.

The next rehearsal of the choir, under the direction of Arnold J. Wagner, is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave. There is no need to RSVP to participate. All interested singers, including those who have yet to attend a rehearsal, need only attend the practice session to join.

The January concert is part of the Martin Luther King Committee's expanded four-day celebration titled "Remember! Celebrate! Act! Creating the Beloved Community."

Plans are now also under way for a youth program, "Remember the Source, Pass the Torch," Jan. 12; a community worship service at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Third Baptist Church, 1177 Park Hill Drive; and for a community workshop Jan. 15 at First Presbyterian Church.

King, leader of the civil-rights movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1964, was born Jan. 15, 1929, and assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.
