WARREN On the corner of Market Street and Mahoning Avenue, Joe Schriner stands in his blue jeans with campaign literature in hand.
His wife, Liz, and three children are nearby also holding signs and talking to passers-by.
Welcome to the presidential campaign of an average Joe who's been trying since 1998 to be elected to the government's top job, and logged 80,000 driving miles crossing the country to make it happen.
"I'm running for president of the United States," he tells one woman as she passes him with a suspicious look on her face. "Really," he adds.
Schriner, a 52-year-old Clevelander, has had to explain his unorthodox presidential campaign countless times to people across the country over the years, but the message seems to make sense once people hear it, he said.
"It's playing real well in Ohio," he said, noting that his campaign has generated front-page news in most cities where he has traveled. And having run for president in the previous two elections, he is becoming known. He has visited all 88 counties in Ohio two to three times, he said.
"This time we think we can win Ohio," Schriner said, explaining he was a write-in in Ohio in 2004 and is an independent candidate.
"I can't compete with the other guys nationwide, but we can compete with them in Ohio," he said, adding that he will focus on his home state this time.
Schriner is a former journalist who now works as a handyman and painter about four months of the year and presidential candidate the rest of the time. He focuses on the environment, the family and living a simple lifestyle.
He and his wife believe in taking their three children, ages 4, 9 and 11, on the campaign trail with them some of the time so that the children can learn "as much about helping others as they do learning about math, science and English," he said.
