COLUMBUS — State officials have signed off on funding for new facilities at 34 school districts, including three in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Girard, Brookfield and Springfield school districts were among those approved by the Ohio School Facilities Commission this week.

Girard will receive about $20.9 million in state funding.

It will provide a local share of about $5.2 million as part of a $26 million project.

The district has already approved a 3.8-mill bond levy to cover the local share of the building costs.

The Girard bond issue calls for the district to demolish the school on North Ward Avenue and build a new junior/senior high facility on undeveloped land on Shannon Road near Beaver Street and Goist Lane.

Brookfield will receive about $20 million in state funding.

It will provide about $11.3 million as a local share as part of a $31.4 million project.

Board President Joe Pasquerilla said the board has passed a resolution to place a bond levy on the November ballot, but the exact number of mills has not been decided.

The board, he said, will hold special meetings Aug. 4 and Aug. 11 to determine the number of mills needed and discuss other financial issues concerning the bond levy.

Springfield's share

Springfield Local will receive about $19.8 million. It will provide $10.7 million as part of a $30.5 million project.

Debbie Mettee, superintendent, said the board has accepted the state's proposal and will likely go before voters in November.

She said the board still must decide what improvements it will make on top of those recommended by the state.

"We are working on developing our master plan for voters," she said. "We know what they will pay, but we are deciding what are more things we can do at the same time."

The funds will be used for the design and construction of new or renovated schools, said Rick Savors, spokesman for the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

The state controlling board next must sign off on the appropriations.

The commission this week approved $1.26 billion for master facilities planning across the state.

Of the total, $792.6 million will come from the state, with the remainder provided at the local level.

The Ohio School Facilities Commission has disbursed about $5 billion state funding for building projects since fiscal 1998.

It administers state programs that provide funds for new school buildings and renovations of existing facilities, with an eye toward improving classroom atmosphere and educational programing in the process.

To date, the commission has provided funding for more than 780 building projects, 480 of which are completed and 300 in design or construction phases, according to the group's 2006 annual report.

It has disbursed $4.9 billion through 12 programs, covering everything from new construction and renovations to emergency repairs and disability access.
