NORTH LIMA Police have identified the child struck and fatally injured by a vehicle in a driveway on Calla Road in Beaver Township as 13-month-old Kailyn Nicole Orr, daughter of Scott and Trisha Orr of Woodworth Road, also Beaver Township. The girl was visiting at the home of her grandparents, Kenneth and Deborah Orr of 1168 W. Calla Road, when the accident occurred at 12:20 p.m. Friday. Police said the vehicle was driven by a family member but released no further details Saturday, noting that a full report should be available Monday. The Mahoning County coroner's office did an autopsy Saturday but issued no ruling.
Old Timer's Day planned
NEW CASTLE, Pa. The 101st annual Old Timer's Day will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Cascade Park Pavilion. The free event will include lunch, dancing, prizes and souvenirs. Helen Morgan is the 2007 chairwoman and Beverly Gianni is in charge of registration. Ray Melcer will provide sing-along entertainment with music by the Nick Perrotta Band.
Man arrested in threat
YOUNGSTOWN Police said they arrested John A. Hill, 40, of West Boston Avenue after he admitted telling a South Side restaurant owner that he would rob the business. The owner said Hill walked into East Wind Chinese Fast Food in the 2800 block of Market Street near 7:30 p.m. Friday, made the robbery threat and then threw menus on the floor before leaving. The threat caused two patrons of the restaurant to flee, the owner said. Hill was still in the parking lot when officers arrived and he admitted making the threat, police said. He was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and inducing panic and lodged in Mahoning County Jail pending arraignment Monday.
Bullet strikes front door
YOUNGSTOWN Police said an Ayers Street woman who heard gunfire outside her East Side house around 11:54 p.m. Friday discovered that a bullet struck the lower panel of her front door. The victim, who lives in the 100 block of Ayers, said her son, who was also home at the time, saw a van speed away heading south on Ayers but was unable to get a good description of the vehicle.
Filling county vacancies
NEW CASTLE, Pa. Lawrence County Treasurer Ron Patrick wants to fill some vacant positions with an independent contractor. Patrick, who was named treasurer by Gov. Ed Rendell after the former treasurer, Gary Felasco, was sent to prison for stealing from his office, has asked county commissioners to approve a contract with Marian Baeckel of New Castle. She is to be paid $11 an hour for 28 hours of work each week. Patrick was left without a deputy treasurer after the retirement of Cathy Toscano, a longtime county employee who did not win the county Democratic nomination for the job. In his first week on the job, Patrick fired the second deputy treasurer, Gloria Conti. Conti was the star witness in Felasco's embezzlement trial. Patrick will remain county treasurer until January, when a newly elected treasurer will take office.
Airport receives money
GROVE CITY, Pa. Grove City Airport will receive $292,500 from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to build taxiways for access to new aircraft storage hangars, which are being built.
