SCOUTS

Received Eagle award

Kyle G. Cunningham, member of Troop 115 Canfield, earned his Eagle Scout award at a court of honor ceremony at St. Michael Church, Canfield. He is the son of Glen and Kathy Cunningham of Youngstown.

Kyle became a Tiger Cub in 1996 and entered Cub Scouts the following year. While he was a member of St. Christine Pack 22, he earned the Arrow of Light, the Cub's highest award.

He joined Troop 115 in 2001 and has served various positions, including quartermaster, assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow. Kyle earned a total of 30 merit badges and the Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius awards, which are Catholic religious awards.

His Eagle Scout service project involved gathering materials and designing and constructing an information kiosk. This kiosk is at the Robinson Point boat launch at Lake Milton. It holds a sign designed by Rob Carillo that identifies fish native to Ohio waters.

Kyle, 18, is a senior at Cardinal Mooney High School. He has served four years as equipment manager of the varsity football team, was a member of the JV golf and bowling teams, and serves as a pallbearer for the Christian service club. He will attend Walsh University in the fall where he will major in business.

Achieves Eagle status

Troop 25, Boy Scouts of America chartered to Canfield United Methodist Church, is announcing the award of Eagle Scout to Thomas C. Mikes, son of Tom and Gerri Mikes of Montridge Drive, Canfield and Justin A. Mirto, son of J.D. and Sue Mirto of Adeer Drive, Canfield. They were presented with the awards at a Court of Honor on May 2 at the church by their Scoutmasters.

Thomas, 18, was a Cub Scout from 1996 to 2000 in Cub Scout Pack 25 at the church. He attained the highest rank, Arrow of Light and received the Cub Scout World Conservation Award. He joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in 2000.

He has held positions of troop guide, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and den chief of Pack 25. He received 23 merit badges and the Fifth Year Pipestone, Gettysburg Historic Trail Award, Philmont Challenge Award and Bob Roberts Memorial Back Patch Award with six points and 50-mile Afloat award in canoeing.

He also participated in JLT Green Bar Training, Philmont Scout Ranch, Scout Encampment USS Little Rock.

For his Eagle service project, he planned, designed, coordinated and supervised construction of an environmental outdoor classroom for pupils at Hilltop Elementary School. He consulted with faculty and staff to design the project, obtained all the necessary approvals, raised money to fund it and enlisted fellow scouts and others to help build it. There are six permanent plastic benches for 25 pupils and a podium for the teachers to use along with paths for a more hands-on look at the environment. The teachers began using the classroom as soon as it was finished in the fall of 2005.

He is a senior at Canfield High School and will attend The Ohio State University, where he will major in international business. He is a member of National Honor Society, a Canfield Varsity Hockey four-year letterman, Key Club and Rotary Interact Club. He has also been a member of the Canfield High School concert and marching bands for two years where he has played the baritone. He is also an Advanced Open Water Certified Scuba Diver.

He received the PTO Academic Excellence Award in 2005 and 2006, Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League All-Academic Honor Award, 2006-2007.

He is a member of St. Michael Church in Canfield, where he attended a mission trip to Krahn, Ky., and is an usher.

Another Eagle for troop

Justin Mirto, 18, son of J.D. and Sue Mirto, Adeer Drive, Canfield, also earned his Eagle Scout award. He was a member of Cub Scout Pack 25 and received its highest rank, Arrow of Light. He joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in February 2000.

He is junior assistant scoutmaster and has held the positions of assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, troop guide and assistant senior patrol leader.

He earned 22 merit badges and the Gettysburg Trail Medal and two-year mile swim patches, God and Church Religious Award, Fifth Year Pipestone Award, Seven Ranges Scout Reservation. He also received he Bob Roberts Memorial Back Patch with six points.

His scout activities included ordeal member of Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow, Gettysburg Historic Hike and Campout 2004, Tinnerman Canoe Base in Canada and 2005 Philmont 50-mile trek in New Mexico.

For his Eagle project he planned, designed, coordinated and supervised the construction of shelving for a storage area at the Beatitude House Potter's Wheel.

He is a senior at Canfield High School and will attend the University of Cincinnati.

He was a varsity letterman in football and wrestling. He is a member of Canfield United Methodist Church, where he participated in youth groups and will take the 2007 mission trip.

Photo published in People

Katie Morgan, formerly of McDonald, had a photograph recently published in the May 7 issue of People magazine. A photojournalist with the Jackson Sun in Jackson, Tennessee, Katie has been covering the Mary Winkler trial and the picture published is of Winkler while on the witness stand.

Katie is a 2000 graduate of McDonald High School and also graduated from Kent State University in 2004 with a degree in photojournalism.

Milestones is a regular Sunday feature in The Vindicator. Articles must be submitted within 30 days of the Milestone event. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you want a picture returned.
