BOARMAN — Bicyclists will take to U.S. Route 224 here May 16 to honor bicyclists who have been killed by motorists.

The two-wheeled procession begins at 7 p.m. that day at Youngstown Sports Grille, 7463 South Ave.

"The basic concept is to honor those people and try to inform the public that they're supposed to share the road with cyclists," said organizer Dan DeSalvo.

All participants will be asked to observe an "honorary" silence. In hundreds of cities across the globe, at the same moment, riders will be doing the same.

The Ride of Silence began in Dallas in 2003 in honor of cyclist Larry Schwartz, who was killed after being hit by the mirror of a passing bus, according to the Ride of Silence Web site.

DeSalvo brought the event to Youngstown last year.

"A [cycist] friend of mine was killed out in Colorado," he said. "There was a motorist involved.

"I said, 'I think we should do something.'"

Almost 75 riders attended last year's event, he said.

Service at 6:30

No registration or fees are required. A pre-ride service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Youngstown Sports Grille. Riders will begin biking north to Route 224, where they will proceed East to Tippecanoe Road in Canfield. After reaching Tippecanoe, participants will then return to their starting point, said DeSalvo.
