GIRARD — Police arrested a Youngstown man and a Youngstown teenager in connection with a shooting that left a Girard man in critical condition.

Police found Anthony Owens, 18, of North Highland Avenue, unconscious and with a gunshot wound to the neck on Smithsonian Street, near Ward Avenue, shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Owens was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he remains in critical condition.

Police arrested Brett M. Williams, 19, of Portland Avenue, Youngstown. He was arraigned on a felonious assault charge in municipal court, and a $50,000 bond was set. He remains in Trumbull County Jail.

Police also arrested a 16-year-old male juvenile from Youngstown. He is being held in the Trumbull County Family Court Center, but police would not release his name.

Police Chief Frank Bigowsky said police are also looking for a third man believed to be the actual shooter.

Bigowsky said police learned that Owens met with the other individuals to exchange money for guns, but the deal somehow went wrong.

"It appears that the individuals tried to rip off Mr. Owens and he was shot," said Bigowsky.

Bigowsky said Owens may also face charges upon his recovery.

Drug raid

Police, just days ago, conducted a drug raid where marijuana, cocaine, cash and guns were found in a Church Hill Road apartment.

Bigowsky, however, said drug activity and shootings are not what residents here should expect in the coming warmer months.

"I am hoping this is just an anomaly and will not be indicative of the coming summer," he said. "We are taking a proactive approach, and the officers are doing a great job."

Officials are still looking for Joseph Hall, 25, and Daniel Honzu, 26, in connection with the suspected drug activity at the Church Hill Road address.

Melissa Daniels, 23, a third suspect in that case, turned herself in to police Thursday. She was arraigned in municipal court Friday on felony charges of permitting drug abuse and is being held in Trumbull County Jail on $10,000 bond.
