HOWLAND Realtor Fran H. Cunningham has been selected to chair the 2007 campaign of United Way of Trumbull County.
In accepting the leadership Tuesday during the organization's 84th annual meeting and awards luncheon at Leo's Ristorante, Cunningham called on the community to preserve and strengthen its legacy of caring.
"Our community is counting on us," said Cunningham, of Caldwell Banker-First Place Real Estate.
She succeeds John A. Guarnieri, vice chairman of Albert Guarnieri & Co., who announced the campaign raised $1.75 million in donations in 2006. This is compared with $1.85 million in donations during 2005.
"After months of planning, recruitment and solicitation, I'm pleased that our campaign team raised an impressive $1.75 million on behalf of our neighbors in need," Guarnieri said.
He noted that despite the soft economy and a number of new economic obstacles, the appeal achieved a number of objectives.
About 170 community leaders and volunteers attended the annual meeting during which Diane R. Sauer, president of Diane Sauer Chevrolet and outgoing chairwoman of the United Way board, highlighted accomplishments and recognized the efforts of volunteers, contributors, service providers and staff.
What's being done
Sauer outlined ongoing agency efforts to move beyond its traditional role as a fundraiser and distribution federation to focus on prioritized issues and measurable results.
"What matters is not merely the number of clients served, it's the results the successful and lasting outcome that can be achieved for the betterment of our community," Sauer said.
She explained that community impact efforts are accelerating as United Way forms collaborations with other caring systems to bring about collective solutions to the community's most pressing human service issues.
Sauer, who received an award for exemplary leadership as chairwoman of the board, presented the Distinguished Service Award to Guarnieri for his campaign leadership.
Other awards
Other voluntary service awards were presented by Sauer to:
Jerry J. McGee, vice president and chief financial officer, Seven Seventeen Credit Union, chairman of the budget and allocations committee; and Michael A. DeCenso, engineering director, materials cost reduction, Delphi Packard Electric, chairman of the finance and administration committee.
Also receiving the award were Richard A. Darkangelo, retired director, Trumbull Lifelines, head of the community impact committee; and Evelyn H. McGhee, technical expert, Social Security Administration, chairwoman of planning committee.
Campaign Chairman's Awards went to J.C. Penney Co., attaining the highest percent of employees giving potential; EMBARQ, achieving the highest percentage increase based on employee giving potential; and Turner Middle School and Emerson Elementary in Warren for the highest per student contributions.
Special recognition was given to St. Joseph Health Center and Diane Sauer Chevrolet for sponsoring the Mahoning Valley Scrappers home run promotion; LensCrafters for its Gift of Sight program; and 51 area merchants for participating in the Caring Club, a program that offers discounts for contributions of $120 or more.
