Large tree falls across road, killing driver

BOARDMAN — Police and fire officials are investigating an accident that took the life of one person traveling in the area.

According to firefighters, a township man was driving a small pickup truck along Shields Road just before 4 p.m. Monday when a large tree fell over, crushing the cab of the truck. The driver, Lawrence Kish, 54, of Lockwood Boulevard, was killed. Officials believe the tree was felled by the high winds that blew through the area Monday, gusting at times over 40 miles an hour.

Police Chief Patrick Berarducci offered condolences to the Kish family, saying the fallen tree appears to be an act of nature.

Nature also wreaked havoc in less fatal forms across the area.

Paul Harkey, Ohio Edison area manager, said the storms and high winds left more than 15,500 people without power early Monday evening. Work crews managed to restore power to about 6,000 of those customers by 9:30 p.m.

Harkey said most of the remaining customers should have had their power restored by midnight, but Ohio Edison forestry crews would need to work throughout the night to remove trees before lines could be restored in some areas.

Harkey said anyone experiencing problems with electrical service should call (800) 633-4766 or (888) 544-4877.
