'Spectacle of Speed' will promote the arts

In Youngstown, a similar project was done with penguins.

WARREN — Six-foot-tall statues of winged goddesses will dot the Trumbull County landscape next summer as part of a new exhibit of the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County.

The project, titled "A Spectacle of Speed," will allow area artists to decorate replicas of Packard's famous Goddess of Speed hood ornaments, which appeared on the cars from 1926 to 1950.

The statues will be made of fiberglass and painted white. Local artists will have from February through May to decorate their statues.

In late June, the statues will be displayed at the Warren Community Amphitheater before being placed at historic sites throughout Trumbull County.

Similar projects

The exhibit is modeled after similar projects in other cities, including Youngstown, which displayed penguins; and Cleveland, which displayed guitars.

Thirty statues will be commissioned, and sponsors will pay $3,000 apiece to fund the artists' work.

So far, 17 sponsors have been secured. Each sponsor's name will be placed on a plaque at the base of its statue.

The Spectacle of Speed project will conclude in October 2007 with a live auction at Packard Music Hall to raise funds for the Fine Arts Council, the National Packard Museum, the Trumbull 100 Community Foundation and Trumbull Art Gallery's Summerfest.

Anyone wanting more information on the project should contact the Fine Arts Council at (330) 399-1212 or on the Web at www.TrumbullArts.org.
