YOUNGSTOWN — The intensive manhunt that followed the shooting of a federal agent Wednesday ended when suspect William Amos turned himself in at about midnight that day.

But the Wednesday search by numerous law enforcement authorities wasn't fruitless.

During the sweep in the South Side neighborhood surrounding the shooting scene, police apprehended two men charged in homicides July 8 and 9.

Gerald Hardaway, 26, of Ravenwood Avenue, and Dion Weatherspoon, 19, of Hilton Avenue, were arraigned on murder charges Thursday.

Meanwhile, Amos' hearing was continued to allow federal authorities and local prosecutors to discuss the proper place to try the 22-year-old East Florida Avenue resident.

Detective John Kelty said prosecutors had not yet decided whether Amos would be charged with felonious assault or attempted murder in the shooting of an undercover agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the foot.

Other suspects' cases

Weatherspoon is accused of shooting William "Mike" Burr, 27 — the only witness to his brother's murder last December — four times at point-blank range in the 3200 block of South Avenue on July 8.

Burr was to testify at the trial of the two men charged in his brother's death.

One of those men was a close friend of Weatherspoon's, said assistant city prosecutor Bassil Ally.

Weatherspoon, a suspected gang member, was listed as the U.S. Marshals Most Wanted Fugitive this week.

Hardaway is charged in a shoot-out style killing of Rodney M. Brown, 45, of Devon Avenue, on Albert Street and McGuffey Road on July 9, Ally said.

A municipal court judge set bond at $2 million for both men.
