Arson suspected in fire
YOUNGSTOWN Arson is the suspected cause of a fire and explosion that blew a Livingston Street house off its foundation. Fire investigators said it appeared that several fires were started in the 1 1/2 story house at 38 Livingston St. Wednesday evening. There was no electrical service to the house, but it did have natural gas service, investigators said. A neighbor heard an explosion around 8:30 p.m. and looked out her window to see a man she identified as a resident of the damaged home standing in its backyard. She said he jumped over a fence and ran off. Fire investigators said Thursday that they were still trying to locate that man. They were also still trying to determine who owns the property. Damage was estimated at $27,000.
Man faces drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN A routine traffic stop of a car with no tail lights ended in a drug arrest by city police. Officers stopped a car driven by Anthony J. Daniels, 23, of Campbell Street, on Mahoning Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. A records check showed that Daniels was under license suspension for an in-state drug conviction, prompting officers to search the car. They said they found two small plastic bags of suspected cocaine hidden behind the car radio, which had been loosened from the dashboard. Daniels admitted the drugs were cocaine and told officers he had more in his sock, police said. The drugs were confiscated. Daniels was arraigned Thursday on charges of drug possession and driving under suspension and held in lieu of $9,000 bond.
Two remain hospitalized
AUSTINTOWN Two men seriously injured in a crash that shut down Interstate 80 for four hours remained hospitalized late Thursday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Walter M. Burkholder, 29, of Niles, was driving east on I-80 when his pickup truck ran off the left side of the road and hit a crash barrier in the construction zone just west of state Route 46 shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday. The truck overturned, throwing out the passenger, Robert J. Kester, 47, of Campbell, police said. The accident closed the highway's eastbound lanes. Burkholder and Kester were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where Kester was listed as critical Thursday. Burkholder was a patient in the hospital, but his condition was unspecified, a hospital spokeswoman said.
