MCDONALD HONOREES Those recognized
McDonald Mayor James Border read the names, rankings and brief accounts of 19 military veterans, all from the village, whose names are engraved on a memorial here. Their histories and service:
Garfield Bequeath: Member of the 85th Mountain Regiment of the 10th Infantry. Killed in action on the Italian front on or about April 16, 1945.
John Black: Flight officer with the Air Force's 20th Bomb Squad, 2nd Bomber Group. Navigated a B-17 bomber on a mission to Germany before he and his crew were shot down around March 22, 1945.
Pfc. Mark Bokan: Member of the 40th Transportation Carrier Squad, 317th Carrier Group who was stationed in Matushima, Japan. Died Oct. 19, 1947, during the occupation of Japan.
Richard Clifford: Navy helmsman 3rd class, attached to the U.S. Pollus AKS3. Killed in a jeep accident Oct. 2, 1957, while on duty in California.
Pfc. William Flere: Member of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division of the Army. Lost his life June 25, 1944, in Cherbourgh, France, during the Invasion of Normandy.
Pfc. Henry Galbreath: With the 5th Infantry Battalion of the 11th Armored Division. Killed in action on or about Jan. 22, 1945.
Lt. John Headd: Infantry company commander with the 7th Army who was killed in action in France. .
Dennis Johnson: Killed on or around April 16, 1968, during a battle in Vietnam.
Army Corp. George Kuchick Jr.: Fought in Europe before being listed as missing in action Jan. 2, 1945, and killed in action March 17, 1945.
Harold Lisdel: Flight officer with the 203rd Army Air Force. Died April 22, 1944, in a midair collision over Kansas.
Pfc. Donald May: With the Combat Engineers of the 3rd Army in Europe. Died in combat on or around March 26, 1944.
Pfc. Douglas McFalls: Member of the 101st Army Airborne. Was killed in a jeep accident March 24, 1967, at Fort Campbell, Ky., after returning from Vietnam.
Sgt. Edward Miller: With the 1st Cavalry, Army Engineers. Miller, along with three other servicemen, drowned in 1950 while stationed in Korea.
Vernon Nock: A private with the 1st Marines Division who died on or around May 9, 1945, in the battle for Okinawa. He was 17.
Lt. Albert Plecha: Member of the Air Force attached to the 310th Fighter Bomber Squadron, who was killed on or close to Sept. 10, 1952, on a mission over Korea. Also served from 1944 to 1946 in the Navy.
Army Pfc. John Scaebrough: With the 104th Infantry Regiment of the 20th Division. Killed on or around Nov. 26, 1944, in France during the Battle of the Bulge.
Sgt. Albert Sikora: With the occupational forces in Europe before being killed in November 1945 in a jeep accident in Belgium.
Matthew Vinkovich: Member of the Army who died of nonbattle wounds in England. Date of death unknown.
George Vukelich: Served in the Army and was killed during the invasion of France at Normandy.
