YOUNGSTOWN — A South Lakeview Avenue woman who told police she couldn't "keep track" of her 16-year-old son — a robbery suspect — has been charged with violating parental responsibility.

Kay M. Brown, 39, was arraigned on the charge Thursday in municipal court and released on her own recognizance. A pretrial was set for Aug. 24.

Brown could not be reached to comment. If found guilty, she faces up to 90 days in jail and $750 fine.

The sequence of events that led to Brown's arrest began when patrolmen Assad Chaibi, Ken Blair and Tony Vitullo were sent to the 100 block of Lakeview in response to a robbery Wednesday evening.

The reported crime

The victim, a 21-year-old Boston Avenue man, told the officers that he was knocked off his bike, then punched and kicked by several teenage boys. During the assault, one of the suspects fled with the bike, which reports show is worth $300.

The bike (a Next T22) was recovered by the robbery victim from an unidentified juvenile before the officers' arrival. The victim was advised to contact the juvenile division for further action.

Two of the boys allegedly involved were identified by name, including Brown's 16-year-old son, who the victim and witness said ran into his house.

Police first approached a 17-year-old boy identified by the victim and witness as the one who took the bike. He was spotted on a porch nearby and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face a robbery charge. The boy told police he only punched the victim twice.

By the time police approached Brown's door, she told them she did not know where her son was, that he was roaming the neighborhood somewhere — adding he's a teenager and she can't keep track of him. The officers searched the neighborhood but didn't find the boy.

Brown's son was expected to turn himself in today, said Detective Sgt. John Perdue, officer in charge of the Family Investigation Services Unit. He said the boy will face a robbery charge.
