Sewer project cost rises to $4.8M

SPRINGFIELD — New estimates by the Mahoning County engineer's office show the cost of the Petersburg sewer project has risen to $4.8 million.

Springfield Township Trustee Robert Orr said original estimates were $3.1 million but that the rising cost of pipe and Ohio Department of Transportation rules for sewer lines running along state highways have driven the cost up.

He said during Wednesday's trustees meeting that the county is seeking additional funding and is expected to advertise the bids soon.

Also Wednesday, Trustee James Holleran reported that trustees and the county engineer are also working on an agreement with Waste Management in which the Petersburg sewer line would accept leachate from the landfill. Currently the leachate is trucked away. Orr said after the meeting that the sewer line will pass the landfill at Unity and Garfield Roads.

Orr also reported that $1.3 million has now been obtained for the Petersburg waterline project, leaving the project only about $300,000 short of its goal.

Recycling Coordinator Dorothy Hudak reported that after Christmas, residents can drop wrapping paper in brown paper bags at the township recycling site behind the township building. No bows or ribbons should be included.

Trustees accepted the resignation of Pastor Frank Podolinski as police chaplain effective Sunday. Podolinski is moving from the area to take another pastorate. The township's first police chaplain, he has held the post three years.
