Robber kills man walking on Falls Ave.

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said they are trying to identify a man found shot to death in an apparent robbery on Falls Avenue.

Detective Sgt. Rick Alli said late Saturday that there was some uncertainty as to the first name of the victim. The man's last name is Davis, he said.

Police were called around 12:20 a.m. Saturday to investigate a report of a shooting and found the victim lying face down on the sidewalk in front of a house at 334 Falls Ave.

He had an apparent gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Police detectives and the Mahoning County coroner's office are investigating. If the death is ruled a homicide, it will be the 29th in the city this year, compared with 33 at this time last year.

The victim was described by police as a black man about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds. He had a goatee and mustache and was wearing a blue T-shirt, blue ski jacket, blue jeans and black boots.

A man living in the 300 block of Falls told police he heard a gunshot and then a man's voice saying, "Give me your money."

The resident said he then heard two more gunshots, looked out his window, spotted the victim lying on the sidewalk and called 911.

A second witness visiting friends in the 300 block of Falls told police he heard one or two gunshots and looked out a window to see a man about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 175 pounds and wearing a black, bulky winter coat walking away from the area, headed toward Edwards Street. Police said he may have been the gunman.
