Last sales tax rally

YOUNGSTOWN — The final public rally in support of Mahoning County's 0.5-percent sales tax ballot issue is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Committee for Our Future, the organization leading the pro-sales tax movement, is asking people to attend the event, which will be at the Maronite Center's picnic pavilion off South Meridian Road. Free food and soft drinks are available. The sales tax is on Tuesday's countywide ballot. The tax generates about $14 million annually for the county.

Museum open Sundays

PETERSBURG — Springfield Township Historical Society wants residents of other areas to visit the township's museum from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Sunday of each month May through October. The meetinghouse and museum are on Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, the third building on the right south of the blinking light at state Route 170 and Garfield Road. The museum contains artifacts from businesses, farms, wars and Springfield High School as well as contributions from many residents of the township. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. $25,000 loss in house fire

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Fire officials are looking for the cause of a blaze that extensively damaged a city home Friday. Firefighters responded to the fire at 322 Locust St. at 1:42 p.m. The homeowners, whose names were not released, were not home at the time. Fire officials estimated the damage at $25,000.

Meningitis vaccine clinic

AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering a meningitis vaccine clinic on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the board office at 50 Westchester Drive. A limited amount of the meningitis vaccine, Menactra, will be available for children 11 to 18 for $10 per shot. Medicaid cards are accepted. No appointments are necessary. Call the district's nursing division at (330) 270-2855 Ext. 125 if additional information is needed.

Complaint doesn't hold up

GIRARD — The Ohio Elections Commission has found "no probable cause" in a complaint filed against Law Director Mark Standohar and board of education member Edward Semple. The complaint had been filed by Harry DePietro, who is a candidate for law director. In the complaint, DePietro contended that both Semple and Standohar made disparaging and false comments about his health "in order to promote the election of Standohar."

Sobriety checkpoint

A sobriety checkpoint will be held in Mahoning County from 8 p.m. to midnight today. The Mahoning County Operating Vehicle Impaired Task Force will be targeting OVI offenders and those not wearing seat belts. Funding for the extra patrols comes from grants administered by the Goshen Police District.

Honors for robotics team

WARREN — State Rep. Tom Letson of Warren, D-64th, will be presenting proclamations to the Warren G. Harding Delphi ELITE (Encouraging Learning in Technology and Engineering) Robotics Team at 1 p.m. Monday in Harding's auditorium for accomplishments in worldwide competitions this year. The Harding team earned second place in its division during the World Robotics Championships in Atlanta during April 12-17. The second-place finish puts the team among the top eight teams in the world this season. The Harding team also earned a regional championship, sportsmanship award and safety award at the Regional Robotics Championship in Toronto.

Funding for schools

COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland announced that 39 school districts, including Springfield in Mahoning County and Brookfield in Trumbull County, have been identified for funding this year from the Ohio School Facilities Commission. The announcement is the first step in the project funding process. The next step, which will take place in June, will be local boards' approval of the districtwide facility plans developed jointly by OSFC and the district. After local approval, the OSFC will formally consider the facility plans and projected project budgets at its July meeting, and the State Controlling Board will be asked for approval during August.

Waste workshops

WARREN — The Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District and Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District are having two household waste workshops from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District facility, 5138 Enterprise Blvd. The workshops are free and will cover what waste the average household produces and ways to manage that waste.
