Human trafficking to be topic of program at Villa Maria center
VILLA MARIA, Pa. The Sisters' Peace and Justice Connection will sponsor a free program on human trafficking from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 at Villa Maria Community Center, Evergreen Road. The session is open to the public.
Human trafficking is the world's third-most lucrative illegal commercial activity after trade in narcotics and weapons, says the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Trafficking in humans is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of people, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, or deception for the purpose of exploitation. Most of the victims are women and young girls.
Co-sponsors are Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and Cleveland, Cleveland Diocesan Commission on Catholic Community Action and Mercy Medical Center.
