Fuel costs are issue in Pa. race

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — Rising fuel costs have Jason Altmire, the Democratic nominee for the 4th Congressional District, calling for alternative fuel sources.

Altmire made four stops Thursday in the district at gasoline stations, all with prices for regular unleaded teetering around $3 per gallon.

The Democrat blames his opponent, U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart, and President George Bush for the rising fuel costs.

Both were supporters of an energy bill enacted one year ago Thursday that was intended to keep fuel costs low; instead, according to Altmire, it has sent profits to big oil companies.

The cost for a barrel of fuel at this time last year was $57, and now it is $76, Altmire contends.

"One year ago, $3 a gallon was a doomsday scenario. Now it's the norm, and it will climb from here," he said.

Aligning government support

Altmire, instead, would like to see the federal government invest its money in biofuels that could be produced in the Midwest.

He would send federal dollars to local gasoline stations to outfit them for ethanol and biofuel, as well as car manufacturers to produce more cars with alternative energy sources.

John Todorich of Ellwood City liked what he heard Thursday outside of Barry's gas station on Line Avenue.

"We need a change," he said noting that he opposes Hart's support of the war in Iraq and her opposition to increasing the minimum wage.
