Forestry meeting
Forestry meeting
CANFIELD The Northeast Ohio Forestry Association will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Experimental and Educational Farm on state Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds. The meeting is open to the public.
Richard Cappell and Mark Ervin from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division will give a talk about the Current Agricultural Use Value and Ohio Forest Tax Laws property tax laws, which give property tax reductions to those who qualify.
Homeless man charged
YOUNGSTOWN Police said a security guard found a homeless man inside a building at Phantom Fireworks, 555 Martin Luther King Blvd., about 12 a.m. Sunday. A security guard had heard the alarm and found Robert McEaneney, 50, inside, and ordered him to come out with his hands up. Police said the door was unlocked and there was no sign of forced entry, but they took McEaneney to Mahoning County Jail on a charge of breaking and entering.

Policing college parties
COLUMBUS (AP) College towns where students tend to party a little too hearty are looking at ways to defray the costs of keeping them in check. One idea: a 4-cent-a-bottle beer tax to help pay for police and fire services. A Kent lawmaker is considering introducing a bill that would allow voters to decide on such a sin tax for safety forces in their cities. "There would have to be enabling legislation. It would have to be statewide. We can't write a law for one city," said state Rep. Kathleen Chandler, a Democrat. "Being a college town, we have tremendous financial outlays on alcohol-related events, such as house parties that are out of control, littering, Dumpsters and couches set on fire," Kent Councilman John Kuhar said.
