MYCAP will introduce free tax help program
The public can go to the agency offices for tax help through 3 p.m. today.
YOUNGSTOWN The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership will have a press conference at 11 a.m. today, introducing its free tax assistance program and marking the program's official opening for the looming tax season.
MYCAP staff and IRS officials will lead a presentation explaining to Mahoning County residents what exactly they are offering and answering questions as well. Mayors of cities in Mahoning County, county commissioners, councilmen, and other public officials all have been invited to attend.
The public is invited to get the free tax assistance from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MYCAP offices, 101 E. Federal Street, Suite 200. MYCAP is across the street from the downtown post office.
MYCAP also is reaching out to county residents who may be Earned Income Tax Credit eligible category as they file their 2006 income taxes.
About EITC
The EITC is meant to reduce the tax burden on people with low and moderate income, which is supplementary to their normal work wages, thus making work more appealing than assistance from the government.
People who are single or married and who worked full or part time in the last tax year and workers with no children may also qualify for the tax credit.
Last year alone refunds through the program totaled $796,833 to Mahoning-area residents.
In association with Home Savings and Loan and Youngstown State University, MYCAP is inviting everyone to come to take advantage of their free tax-help.
There are no income guidelines and no appointments necessary on what is being called "Super Saturday," since it's on the eve of the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Any and all walk-ins will be accepted today, but appointments will be required for future dates. MYCAP will continue the tax-help program by appointment only from Tuesday until March 10 on select Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
