YOUNGSTOWN — A man was shot multiple times around 4 p.m. today in the bleachers of the former South High School football stadium filled with families watching a Peewee League football game.

According to one witness, the victim came from the direction of Erie Street, which runs behind the stadium and the field house, and ran several steps up into the bleachers to escape another man chasing him.

The victim turned around and punched the suspect, the witness said, and the assailant pulled a handgun and shot him several times. The victim stumbled down several steps to the ground and fell at the feet of a group of cheerleaders, some as young as 4, where the assailant shot him several more times before fleeing.

It was a miracle, one woman said, that someone else was not shot.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center's emergency department where a spokeswoman said he was in surgery about 5:30 p.m. The hospital would not release the victim's name.

Police had closed off the stadium, which is behind Eagle Heights Academy, a charter school, and were interviewing witnesses.
