Board restricts Sunday practices
School officials will hold 'math nights' for some parents in the school district.
CORTLAND Lakeview athletic coaches will not be allowed to regularly schedule practices on Sundays.
School Superintendent Robert Wilson made that announcement at Monday's school board meeting.
The board and administration plan to have a full policy manual for athletic coaches finished before the end of the year, hoping to guide coaches and parents. There currently is no manual for athletic coaches.
Wilson said the administration got numerous comments about practices held on Sundays over the past few months.
"It's nice to see the community rally around the topic, to show that family time on Sunday is important to a lot of people," said Wilson.
Though Wilson mentioned no specific sports, two parents at the meeting mentioned the girls junior varsity basketball program.
The board will also look at special events scheduled on Sundays.
Future policies could include exceptions for athletic fundraisers and practices if a state tournament or playoffs are held the following Monday, Wilson said.
'Math nights' for parents
In other business at the meeting Cortland Elementary School Principal Scott Taylor announced three "math nights" for parents of pupils in third, fourth and fifth grades.
The three meetings will focus on pupil state achievement tests, including sample questions, answers and test discussion from Lakeview teachers.
Third-grade math night is Jan. 11; fourth grade, Jan 25; and fifth grade, Feb. 11. All will be held in the Lakeview High School cafeteria at 6:45 p.m. and will be finished by 8 p.m.
"We want to get parents acquainted with the tests their children are taking; we want them to be in the process as much as their children are," said Taylor.
