Two men charged on gun, drug counts
Both men were at a Stewart Avenue house.
YOUNGSTOWN City police responding to a robbery call arrested two Youngstown men, one on charges including carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, and the other on a charge of drug trafficking.
Police said they received a call at 12:03 a.m. Sunday about a house on the 2100 block of Stewart Avenue. When police arrived, they found Danny Trevathan, 37, of Ives Street outside the back of the house.
Police said Trevathan refused to identify himself and appeared to be concealing something. When Trevathan started to walk away, police said they tried to detain him and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, police said, a .44-caliber handgun fell at Trevathan's feet.
Trevathan went to retrieve the gun resulting in an officer's punching him on the right side of the face and hip-tossing him to the ground, away from the gun, police said. Police said a later check determined that the gun is stolen.
Police charged Trevathan with carrying a concealed weapon, having a weapon with a past felony conviction, receiving stolen property and attempted aggravated burglary.
Trevathan was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a cut on his face from the struggle with police, and was taken to the Mahoning County jail pending an arraignment.
Drug charges
While investigating, police went inside the Stewart Avenue house. Police said they found Elijah Alexander, 18, of Lansdowne Avenue, inside the house along with a shotgun, two bags of suspected cocaine, two bags of suspected marijuana and an electronic scale.
Alexander told police he was house-sitting.
Police charged Alexander with aggravated trafficking in drugs.
While Alexander was at the county jail, a deputy found a small bag of suspected cocaine in one of Alexander's shoes, police said. Alexander is at the jail pending arraignment.
