COLUMBUS — Canfield High's baseball team will be playing for the Division II state championship today.

And for the second straight year, Ursuline High was stopped short of its goal in state competition.

The Cardinals (29-3) defeated Sandusky Perkins 4-2 in Friday's semifinal round and will meet Springfield Kenton Ridge at 2 p.m. today at Cooper Stadium for the championship.

Ursuline, which finished runner-up in Division III a year ago, came prepared to go all the way this year, but ran into a good Bloomdale Elmwood team. The Irish suffered a 3-2 setback in the semifinals of the Division III tournament, also at Cooper Stadium.

Canfield had to survive a wild seventh-inning rally by Perkins as senior pitcher Drew Turocy pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam to get the win and put the Cardinals in their first baseball state final.

This was Canfield's third trip to the state tournament and the first time in the final.

Ursuline was making its seventh trip to the state tournament, the fifth under head coach Sean Durkin.

The Irish won state titles in 1988, when Durkin was a player, and in 2000 with Durkin as the coach.

Ursuline was also runner-up twice — in 2001 and last year.

Canfield is playing for its first team state title.
